Broom joins The 5% Club
Broom is now a member of The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates, and sponsored students.
The 5% Club was founded by Leo Quinn, CEO of Balfour Beatty in 2013 to address the issue of poverty arising from high youth unemployment and a shortage of the right skills. It’s now a movement of more than 500 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to create meaningful careers.
By joining The 5% Club businesses are committed to raising the number of apprentices to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Our business relies on a wide range of skills, including heritage as well as modern boat building, restoration, and servicing techniques. Through apprenticeships we’re able to give great individuals the opportunity to build a career, while also preserving the heritage crafts that have served Broom for over a century.
We welcomed our first three apprentices in January 2021 and have since grown the programme to six which now represents 21% of our permanent workforce. We’re really pleased that Ethan, Levi, Miles, Sinead, Izaak, and James have chosen to start their careers with us.
